Obsidian: Formed from volcanic lava, Obsidian glassy luster is created by the speed in which the lava cools. Obsidiann has been valued in ancient cultures and has been used to make tools, weapons and jewelry, as well as used for ceremonial purposes. It was also a primary barter material for many people.
In Ancient Mexico, Obsidian was called Itzli, which means "divine stone". It was widely used by the Native Americans in making knives and arrowheads. Small nuggets of obsidian that have been shaped by the elements are called "Apache tears." There is an old Apache legend that tells how the nuggets are actually the tears of their ancestors.
Color: The most common color is black, but grey and brown can also be found. Rarer colors such as red, blue, and green also exist and are the most expensive. The stone can sometimes contain small bubbles of air that produce color variations such as a golden, silver or rainbow sheen.
